TRACK FACTS
Wide barriers (10+) can be disadvantaged at 1200m due to the sweeping turn. Middle barriers suit most distances.
Flemington's long straight rewards genuine stayers and horses with a strong finishing kick. On soft or heavy ground, horses drawn wide can be disadvantaged — favour those with proven wet-track form and a barrier inside 10.

FLEMINGTON RACING FAQ
ABOUT FLEMINGTON RACING TIPS
Flemington Racecourse is Australia's most iconic and historic racing venue, home to the Melbourne Cup — the race that stops a nation. Established in 1840 and located just 3km from Melbourne's CBD, Flemington is operated by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) and hosts the world-famous Spring Racing Carnival each November.
The track is a left-handed circuit measuring 2312 metres in circumference, featuring a famously long 450-metre straight that rewards horses with a powerful finishing run. The wide, galloping nature of the course suits genuine stayers and horses that can sustain a strong tempo over a distance. The straight 1000m and 1200m sprint courses are also used, providing a unique flat racing experience.
Flemington hosts four Group 1 races on Melbourne Cup Day alone — the Melbourne Cup (3200m), Victoria Derby (2500m), VRC Oaks (2500m), and Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). The autumn carnival adds the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup to the calendar, making Flemington a year-round destination for Australia's best thoroughbreds.
For punters, barrier draws are critical at Flemington. At sprint distances (1000m–1200m), horses drawn wide face a longer run to the first turn and can be disadvantaged in large fields. At middle and staying distances, the long run to the first turn allows horses to find their feet regardless of barrier, making form and fitness the primary factors.
