The Road to the Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby is unique in that horses must qualify via a points system. Points are awarded through a series of qualifying races (known as the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" series) run from January through April. The top 20 points earners in the standings earn a spot in the Derby starting gate.
This qualification system means that by the time the Derby field is confirmed in late April, there is a substantial amount of form data available for every runner — making the Kentucky Derby one of the more form-based major races to analyse.
Key Lead-Up Races (Road to the Kentucky Derby)
The Louisiana Derby (Fair Grounds, 1.75 miles) — A key early-season lead-up.
The Rebel Stakes (Oaklawn Park, 1.0625 miles) — Run in March, this is a major points race.
The Santa Anita Derby (Santa Anita, 1.125 miles) — A key West Coast lead-up.
The Blue Grass Stakes (Keeneland, 1.125 miles) — Run in April, this is one of the most important final lead-ups.
The Arkansas Derby (Oaklawn Park, 1.125 miles) — Run in April, this is another major final lead-up.
Churchill Downs Track Bias
Churchill Downs has a pronounced bias towards horses that race on or near the pace. Horses that are more than 5 lengths off the pace at the first turn have a very poor record in the Kentucky Derby. The 1.25-mile trip begins on the backstretch, and horses drawn in wide barriers (post positions 15–20) must use significant energy to find a position in the early stages.

Betting Strategy
The Kentucky Derby is one of the most bet races in the world, with over $150 million wagered on the race globally. Key betting considerations:
- Post position matters — horses drawn in post positions 1–10 have a significantly better record than those in positions 15–20
- Pace scenario — identify whether the race will be run at a fast or slow pace, as this significantly impacts which type of horse wins
- Each-way value — most bookmakers pay 4 places each way for the Derby, making each-way betting on a horse at $15–$30 an attractive option
